Water savings in paper mills have reached a technical limit due to the exponential accumulation of dissolved contaminants in the process water causing adverse effects on processes, products, and water treatment.
Between the 1970s and 2000, paper mills substantially decreased their specific effluent discharge volume by around 80%. However, the production capacity doubled in the same time and water savings stagnate since 2000.
